When you are trying to conceive and find out you are pregnant for the first time it is exciting, and I have to say in my case also a little surreal. My husband and I were one of the fortunate couples that conceived easily. I knew this was the year we were going to try and conceive so I had put even more focus on our health (much to Cole’s frustration) and really focused on key things that affect fertility (I will write more on the steps we took in a later post). This focus began months before we planned to conceive so that when we did conceive our bodies would be in the best position the conceive a healthy baby. We wanted to conceive with the healthiest eggs and sperm possible. I point out all of this to say that yes. we were incredibly blessed to conceive easily, on our first try to be exact, but there was a lot of forethought and intentional effort to prepare us for that moment. Anywhoo….back to our excitement. It had happened so fast that it almost didn’t feel real. I took a pregnancy test when my period was only one day late. We were going to a birthday party that night and I just had the thought, “hey I could be pregnant. I better check just in case”. I hadn’t been drinking and I was really looking forward to a gin and tonic to celebrate one of my dearest friends turning 30! I didn’t really think I was pregnant, and I didn’t wait for the results with any sort of anxious anticipation. Cole wasn’t home and he had no idea I was thinking I might be pregnant.
I peed on the stick and 3 minutes later it was positive! It was crazy. I was alone in the house, except for Fenway who really didn’t seem to care, and I just quietly sat with this news. I prayed quiet prayers of praise thanking God for what honestly felt like such a sweet surprise…but goodbye gin and tonic. When Cole got home I was sitting on the couch. I asked him to come sit with me, he sat down and I told him, “I’m pregnant”. His response, “Seriously?!” I nodded yes, then in a move that is SO my husband, he raises his fist for a fist bump and says, “Alright we did it”. If you know Cole, well…you understand.
We spent the rest of the afternoon almost in a dazed excitement. We went to the birthday party that evening where we are spending time with a couple of my oldest friends who have kids themselves. I wanted to share the news but felt that I couldn’t because I’m thinking is this real? I drink soda water with a splash of cranberry all evening pretending it’s a cocktail. One of my friends asked, “is there any alcohol in there?” My response, “Uh why wouldn’t there be?”. I’m a terrible liar and I can’t believe he bought it.
A few days later I took another pregnancy test and sure enough positive again. We really are going to have a baby. The last few months since finding out we are having a baby have been such an interesting experience. There is of course anticipation and excitement but at other times it has been stressful. This is such a special journey that I am so happy to be on. At the end of all of this we just pray for a healthy and happy baby. Thanks for coming with me on this journey, check out my follow up post on when we decided to tell people our big news!
Be Well
