Have you ever had those moments in life where you think, “how did I get here?” Maybe you arrive at that moment because you realize you are about 20lbs heavier than you wanted to be, maybe you are getting out of bed in the morning thinking “wow all my joints hurt, and I feel old”! Maybe that moment comes because you are playing outside with your kids are feeling incredibly out of shape when you used to feel fit and athletic. If you have had those moments, you must know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. It happens every day to thousands of people, we have these realizations that suddenly we are not as healthy as we used to be, or want to be. The problem……it wasn’t sudden. You got to this moment because of a series of choices. The, “I’ll have fries with that.” Telling yourself, “I’d rather sleep in than get up to exercise”….for the 5th morning in a row. Or deciding to watch just one more episode of GOT (or in my husbands case The Blacklist) and saying that for the 3rd time until you have stayed up way later than you intended every night this week and you have become an exhausted zombie at work.
It’s all these choices and many more that we make daily that can lead us on this path away from health and towards sickness. The frustrating thing about this is when we finally do decide to eat better, exercise more, create good sleep habits a switch doesn’t flip where we suddenly become healthy again. You can blame this on physics because it involves momentum. You see momentum is a vector quantity meaning it has a direction. In this case we have been discussing the direction we are moving in is the direction of sickness, disease, poor health. The equation for momentum is momentum = mass x velocity. Every decision we make that is poor for our health is like adding more mass to that equation thus creating greater momentum in that direction. It is like a train picking up speed, it can’t stop on a dime and switch directions. In order to change directions, we would have to collide with something of greater momentum moving in the opposite direction.
What is the opposite of sickness? Health and Wellness. If we make choices that positively impact our body and mind we are building momentum in the opposite direction, Wellmentum™ if you will. Each choice you make in this direction is again like adding more mass to the equation. Remember it must equal the sum of the choices you made in the other direction to even halt the downward spiral toward sickness and then start moving back to health. It will take consistency, time and patience to start building Wellmentum™. People don’t often wake up one morning and say “wow, how did I get so darn healthy”. Moving in the direction of health often requires much more intention and effort than moving towards sickness. It is time, attention and hard work that is so worth it, because you are worth it! You were only given one life to live and one body to live it in. Take care of it, nourish it, LOVE it! Join me in building Wellmentum™. I promise, you won’t regret it.
